Photos: Fun Had By All At Riverhead Country Fair

Despite the rain, visitors enjoyed food and festivities.

Soggy skies didn't dampen the spirits of fun seekers who attended the 37th annual Riverhead Country Fair on Sunday.

Despite the rain that started to fall before 2 p.m., visitors still strolled through downtown Riverhead, sampling the array of tempting fare and shopping for crafts and other wares, carrying umbrellas and dressed in rain gear.

On the grounds of East End Arts, old-fashioned pumpkin decorating contests and vegetable, jam, baking and quilting competitions celebrated Riverhead's deeply rooted agricultural traditions and drew crowds, as did the old-fashioned tractors and other exhibits.

Organizers . thanked the visitors who turned out despite less than sunny skies; the pair worked tirelessly for a year alongside an army of volunteers to make the event a success.

On Saturday, the pair advised visitors to come early, as rain was expected to fall later in the afternoon.

A highlight of the event was a surprise proclamation awarded to Bill Troiano, tuba player for the Sunnyland Jazz Band, who will be moving to Texas.

Also honored was Peter Danowski, who was named Person of the Year by the Daughters of the American Revolution for his generous work to preserve the O.R.Young & Son antique machine shop in Riverhead.

Elected officials including New York State Senator Ken LaValle and Suffolk County Legislator Ed Romaine also attended the festivities, as did Polish Town Queen First Runner Up  Nicole Mielnicki and Riverhead Town Board members Jim Wooten and Jodi Giglio.

A representative for New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said the event is the county's largest fair and read an event from the governor, which stated that the fair was a good chance to celebrate "the rich resources we have on Long Island."

As the rain started to fall, LaValle told the crowd to have a good time and Romaine said visitors should sample the great food. "I've been getting heavier every year because I partake of the food," he joked.
