Irvington among Safest NY Communities: New List

IRVINGTON, NY — Irvington is among 12 communities in the Hudson Valley that made it onto a new list of safest places to live in New York — from Alarm System Reviews.

At No. 1 is Stockport, on the Hudson River in Columbia County. Here's what earned it the top ranking:

Orange County came off best, with six villages or towns on the list, the most of any county. Four of the communities on the list are from Westchester County and one from Rockland.

Who are these guys and why should you pay attention to their rankings? They used data from several national sources including the most recent FBI Uniform Crime Report. The research team compiled and established safety profiles for every reported community in the state of New York with at least 2,500 residents. They totaled the number of violent and property crimes and calculated that total against the reported population to assign an overall crime rate per 1,000 residents. Communities with incomplete data were also excluded from the final rankings.

They had good things to say for the state as a whole, too. New York ranked 16th on the Safest Places to Live in the United States list for 2016.
