Irvington Schools Shut Off 12 Water Sources in 2 Schools for Lead Contamination

None of the district's drinking fountains were affected.

IRVINGTON, NY — Twelve water faucets at two Irvington district schools have tested above the acceptable limit for lead contamination.

Superintendent Kristopher Harrison, in a letter emailed to parents, said none of the drinking fountains were found to be contaminated.

The results were received on October 13 and said seven of the 118 faucets at Dows Lane were above the acceptable limit and five of the 28 faucets at Main Street School were above the limit.

Harrison said all faucets above the acceptable limit were taken out of service until the problem can be solved.

Five of the faucets at Dows Lane that were above the limit were classroom bathroom sinks that are rarely used.

Those classrooms have another sink outside the bathroom door which is used for washing hands.

Additionally, one of three sinks in the library and a cafeteria sink not used for food preparation tested above the limit. All have been taken out of service.

At Main Street School, two classroom sinks were taken out of service.

The three others—in gymnasium bathrooms—cannot be shut down because of their location, so the bathrooms will be closed until remediation is performed.

Harrison said the district is developing a full remediation plan with the help of a consultant.
