Mercy Hosts Oral Cancer Screenings Wednesday

Mercy Medical Center will provide free cancer screenings Wednesday.

The center will screen for oral cancers at their facility Wednesday. Dr. Dean Berman, an Otolaryngologist with 20 years of experience, is overseeing the program in their pre-surgical department. Full event details here.

The Mayo Clinic recommends getting an oral cancer screening if you have:

  • Tobacco use of any kind, including cigarettes, cigars, pipes, chewing tobacco and snuff, among others

  • Heavy alcohol use

  • Previous oral cancer diagnosis

As part of its Early Lung Cancer Action Program, the medical center is also offering a free initial CT scan and one annual follow-up scan. The program is under the direction of Principal Investigator Dr. Gary Herzog, Medical Director of Radiology, along with Dr. Stewart Fox, Chief of Thoracic Surgery and his colleague Dr. Sharhriyour Andaz, with Dr. David Flomenhaft as research coordinator, according to their website.

You are eligible for this program if you are a current or former smoker over 50 years old or you are over 40, have never smoked, and have been exposed to second-hand smoke. More information here.
