Carolyn Vincent Bruenn, Former Rye Brook Resident
Carolyn Vincent Bruenn passed away peacefully at home on May 29, 2014. Born in Denver, Colorado to Raymond George Vincent and Agnes Hazel Weinhold, Carolyn attended both Christian (now Columbia) College and Denver University. Her sense of adventure then led her to work in the airline industry - flying with TWA as a stewardess from 1946 to 1949.
Carolyn met her first husband while flying for TWA. In that era, stewardesses could not be married so she retired from flying and married Lawrence Philip Bruenn in 1949. Together they raised four sons: Philip Vincent, Peter Lawrence, Paul Raymond and Preston Matthew. Laurie, as he was affectionately known, predeceased Carolyn in 1979.
Earlier in her life, Carolyn was active in numerous organizations: Kappa Delta Sorority, Westchester Country Club, New York Athletic Club, The Players Club and Westchester County Cornell Extension Service. Carolyn served for 7 years as president of the Little Gardens of the Tarrytowns garden club.
After the death of her first husband, Carolyn moved from Tarrytown to Rye Brook, New York and worked for Pepsi-Cola from 1980 to 1994 as an administrative assistant. While working full time, Carolyn went back to college and graduated magna cum laude from Pace University with a BS in History. She was a Fellow of Dyson College and a Phi Alpha Theta fraternity member.
In 1991, Carolyn married Frank C. Praete, Jr. Esq. They lived together in the Rye Brook home they both loved so much. Carolyn was a member of Christ's Church in Rye and also the Westchester Dinner Dance Club, the Darien Cotillion, Hits and Misses Bowling League, Ceres Garden Club of Rye, Woman's Club of Rye, American Association of University Women and Clipped Wings International. She also worked in the Port Chester schools and Greenwich Library.
Carolyn had many passions in life. She was a devoted wife and mother. She loved all things natural and enjoyed gardening, tending to her fish pond and feeding wild birds. Carolyn also enjoyed playing bridge, bowling, entertaining, arts and crafts and especially her many dogs over the years.
Carolyn is survived by her four sons, her daughters-in-law Kathleen Bruenn (Lamey) and Cynthia Bruenn (Allin) and ten grandchildren, Philip Vincent, Kinsey Ann, Taylor Jane, Christopher Allin, Courtney Elizabeth, Patrick Lawrence, Jessica Jane, Kimberly Nicole, Kaitlin Rebecca and Kyle Thomas Bruenn. She is also survived by her sister Joanne Vincent Mackay of Denver, CO and her family along with numerous cousins. Carolyn will be sorely missed by those who knew and loved her.
A memorial service is planned at Christ's Church in Rye, New York on Thursday, June 12th at 1:30 PM to celebrate her life and accomplishments. Because Carolyn was a great lover of all natural things, the family requests donations in lieu of flowers to be made to the Camp Fire Conservation Fund, 230 Campfire Road, Chappaqua, NY 10514.
