Hundreds of runners participated in the event, which celebrated the Rye Y's centennial. A press release describing the day is below:
Hundreds of runners and families enjoyed a sunny, breezy day of races and festivities on Sunday, April 27. The 26th Rye Derby was part of a year long celebration of the Rye YMCA’s centennial and included themed Healthy Kids Day activities and a commemorative frisbee for the first 100 runners to finish.
Runners followed either a 5 Mile or 5K course. The winner of the 5 mile race was Mourad Marofit, age 31 (23:40); the female winner for the 2nd year in a row was Askale Merachi, age 27 (28:48). The top Rye 5M runner was Malcolm Gray, (30:59) and the top Rye 5M female runner was Jennifer Hoogstra (37:32) The winner of the 5K race was Rye resident Jonah Gorevic, age 10 (18:33). The female 5K winner was Rye resident Natalie Weiner (20:11). Complete results as can be viewed from a link on the homepage of www.ryeymca.org/
The Rye Y parking lot was packed with Healthy Kids Day fun including active games, an inflatable batting cage, live music, a climbing wall, free BBQ and frozen yogurt, sponsor tables and much more. The streets of Rye overflowed in the afternoon with enthusiastic kids and families participating in the family fun run/walk.
“We are grateful to all the community members – sponsors and volunteers who made this day possible,” said Sally Wright, Rye Y Director of Development. Proceeds will help support the Rye Y financial assistance program, outreach and teen programming.
