Report: Rye Family May Have Been Victim of 'SWAT-ting' Incident

Rye police have grappled with incidents of "SWAT-ting" in the past.

Report: Rye Family May Have Been Victim of 'SWAT-ting' Incident
Rye police believe an investigation into a report of a gunman Sunday may have been an incident of "SWAT-ting," according to News 12 Westchester.

A heavy police contingent responded to a home on Mead Pond Lane Sunday on a report of a gunman who supposedly locked themselves in a bathroom. The Journal News reported that possibly as many as 40 members of the Rye Police Department responded to the scene.

The startled family in the home were evacuated, but no gunman was found.

"It was determined to be a hoax, a false report," Rye Police Lt. Scott Craig told The Journal News.

Authorities believe the incident was an example of "SWAT-ting," where someone calls in false report in an effort to get police to swarm the scene, including with members of the Special Weapons and Tactics team or SWAT.
