Two middle-aged women pretended to shop at Rhythm in Rye on Nov. 16, but they were actually stealing from the Purchase Street clothing store, according to Rhythm’s owner Renee Drummond.

“They stole $700 worth of stuff,” Drummond said. “A jacket and two sweaters.”

Around 1 p.m. the women, who Drummond described as about 5’5, one thin and one who had a medium build, both with dark hair, entered the store and spent about 15 minutes pretending to shop, Drummond said.

As soon as they left a sales clerk noticed the merchandise was missing, Drummond said.

Drummond turned to the security tapes, which the owner said the thieves must not have noticed. The tapes show two women perusing the store and sticking the three expensive items in their purses, Drummond said.

Drummond visited shops up and down Purchase Street to ask other merchants if they knew the two women in the photos. Some said they had seen them before, but no one knew their identities, Drummond said.

Rye police said Drummond reported the larceny on Nov. 17 around 10 a.m. Detective Jake Chittenden said. They are actively investigating the alleged larceny.
