Farmingville FD Asks Residents To Help Dig Out Hydrants

Volunteers say if you see a long stick poking out of the snow, dig your shovel in and expose the hydrant.

Farmingville FD Asks Residents To Help Dig Out Hydrants
The Farmingville Fire Department is calling upon the public to help locate and dig out fire hydrants that might be buried under feet of snow after last night's snowstorm.

Recently the department purchased hydrant sticks, which allow volunteers to find hydrants in areas that have high snow drifts or are situated near plow piles. Now the department is asking the public to help dig out and expose the hydrants if they happen to see a hydrant stick pointing out of the snow in their communities.

In an email from John Skippon, the Farmingville Fire Department's commissioner, the department depends upon the hydrants in the case of a fire emergency. Skippon also urged motorists to take precaution on the roadways as the temperature drops and road conditions get increasingly slippery.
