Other Uses of the Sachem Name
A look at how Sachem is used in other parts of the country.
You all know the basis for the name Sachem, the chief meaning, especially in the Algonquin tribe. Of course you all know the Sachem Central School District was formed with Native American themes out of respect for the older civilizations that once settled on the land you call the Sachem community today.
But in the time since the school district was formed in 1955 and even before there was a centralization of schools in that part of Long Island, the Sachem name has had countless uses.

Camp Sachem: A movie about “a corporate raider falters unexpectedly at a major meeting and discovers he's still haunted by the ridicule he suffered from having left camp two weeks early when he was twelve. To resolve the dilemma, he returns to the same bunk for two weeks and finds himself having to lead the camp's losers.”
The Sachem Award: The Sachem Award is an annual honor given in the state of Indiana. According to Gov. Mitch Daniels the award is reserved for “those who led by moral example as well as successful action.” The award has been given since 2005 and has been received by legendary college hoops coach John Wooden (2005), former University of Notre Dame President Theodore Hesburgh (2006), philanthropist Jane Blaffer Owen (2007), James M. Hammond III (2008), the President/CEO of the Indiana Association of Rehabilitation Facilities, political science professor Elinor Ostrom (2009) and legendary baseball player Carl Erskine (2010).
Sachem Farmhouse Bed and Breakfast: Located in Warren, CT., the bed and breakfast is restored from its 1870 look and overlooks Lake Waramaug. It’s less then two hours from New York City.
Sachem Chemicals: According to the company’s website, founded in 1950, Sachem, Inc. is a privately held chemical science firm. They operate at five facilities located in Austin (TX, USA), Cleburne (TX, USA), Zaltbommel (The Netherlands), Higashi Osaka (Japan), and Wuxi (China).
Sachem Building: An apartment complex in Rochester, N.Y. uses the name Sachem.
Sachem Engineering: An acoustics and engineering firm whose strengths are to , “surround our selves with great tools, have a variety of product & company experience, and have a dedication to fostering relationships with our vendors, colleagues, and customers.” They also own the original URL, www.Sachem.com.
Sachem Lounge: Located within the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, CT.
Sachem Village: Located in Hanover, N.H., the Sachem Village is a housing development located near Dartmouth College in New Hampshire.
Sachem’s Head Yacht Club: Located in eastern Connecticut.
Sachem Ironhorse: The bike company makes a mountain bike with the Sachem name.
Street Names: Across the country there are countless streets that have the Sachem name … there is Sachem Court in Farmingville, Sachem Head Road in Guilford, CT., among others.
Sachem Realty: A real estate company located in Waltham, Mass.
Sachem Study Committee: According to “The Citizen,” a newspaper in Laconia, N.H., the Sachem Study Committee was “formed to look into whether the schools should continue using the Sachem, Native American mascot.”
U.S.S. Sachem: There have been three U.S. Navy vessels that have used the Sachem name. The first was commissioned in 1776, the second in 1844 in New York City and the final one was a patrol craft developed in 1917.
Winchester Sachems: At Winchester High School in Winchester, Mass., they use the name “Sachems” as their mascot.
