Yesterday the Sachem School District held its second annual Heritage Day/Breast Cancer Fundraiser, teaming up with The Maurer Foundation at Sachem High School East.

The event features girls basketball games from the middle schools to showcase in a friendly "heritage" game against one another, while organizers sold raffles, and offered information about breast health education to all in attendance.

“We want to thank Sachem,” Debbie Hecht, executive director of The
Maurer Foundation stated in a release. “This is a terrific event. We’re so happy to see the support for The Maurer Foundation and the spirit here is just tremendous. It pulls so much together and they’ve done so much work with us. They are supporting a wonderful cause, which is to support breast health education and our mission is to save lives through breast health education.”

The Maurer Foundation was founded by Dr. Virginia Maurer, who served as a doctor for legendary Sachem basketball coach Risa Zander during her battle with breast cancer.

Other Sachem sports got involved as well, as members of the county champion runner-up East football team worked the raffle tables. Students from Sachem's cosmetology program offered pink hair extensions in exchange for a donation to the foundation, and pink "We Are Sachem" shirts were available for sale.

“It’s a great day for the community to come together and raise money in
support of a great cause,” said Sachem Athletic Director Pete Blieberg.
