B-BP District Schedules School Security Drills

District officials will present security plan overview on Feb. 26.

B-BP District Schedules School Security Drills

As part of its ongoing effort to assess and improve school safety the Bayport-Blue Point School District will be holding lockdown and lockout drills in every school building between February 12 and February 20.

The drills, according to a letter sent to parents Thursday, will be monitored by security consultants who will then meet with district leaders to discuss how to boost security protocols.

The goal, states the letter, is to familizare students with steps to be taken during an actual emergency and teachers will explain rules and procedures for each drill to the students.

The most recent lockdown incident occurred last November following a phone threat concerning a weapon in the high school. No weapon was found but police arrested a Patchogue teenager attending B-BP high school for making the alleged threat.

On February 26, at a board of education workshop, school leaders will give a "comprehensive" presentation outlining steps taken to improve district security and also potential next steps to strength security systems.

In the letter, School Superintendent Dr. Vicnent Butera invites residents to attend the security presentation, provide feedback and also visit the "Safety in our Schools" tab on the district's website.

The security drills are part of the district's Project Save committee which includes representatives from school administration, the board of education, staff, parents and local fire departments.
