Since the beginning of 2011, the has responded to 47 alarms. In addition to a few automatic fire and carbon monoxide detector activations, we responded to the following alarms in February.
Feb. 5 - Assisted the Sayville Fire Department for a reported boat in distress at the mouth of Browns River canal. Upon investigation it was found that the boat had trouble breaking through the ice but then decided to turn back to the marina. *Bayport, Sayville, Blue Point and Patchogue fire departments have automatic mutual aid agreements for all water rescues.*
Feb. 9 - Assisted the Patchogue Fire Department on West Lake off of West Main Street for a call reporting that two children were on the ice, and missing from their homes. After a complete search of the area it was determined that no one was on the lake or had fallen through.
Feb. 19 - Assisted the West Sayville Fire Department with our ladder truck to the scene of a structure fire on Easy Street. Upon arrival, West Sayville had the fire quickly under control and the ladder truck was placed back in service and returned to Bayport.
Feb. 23 - Responded to a reported Carbon Monoxide detector activation on North Bayport Avenue. Using Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) and gas meters, the crew entered the house (the meter immediately activated) and read 400 parts per million (ppm). The firefighters opened windows and placed a fan into operation venting the house. The cause was found to be a two-stroke motor being used in the basement, which caused the house to fill with carbon monoxide. No injuries were reported.
Feb. 27 - Responded to the rear of the on Montauk Highway for bundles of cardboard that were on fire.
Please remember, if you see a blue light, please pull to the right in order to allow the firefighter to proceed to the alarm. Seconds count! You never know when it might be someone you know that needs our help.
