UPDATE: Walmart Not Altering Gun Sale Policy

Nation's largest retailer said no changes will be made following Newtown shooting.

UPDATE: Walmart Not Altering Gun Sale Policy

Following publication of the article below, Patch received more information from Walmart regarding its gun products and accessory sales. Here is the additional information:

Walmart does sell Modern Sporting Rifles (MSR) in about 1,200 stores in areas where these products are relevant to customers in those stores, according to the retailer.

"I think it’s also important to note that Walmart only sells low-capacity magazines for Modern Sporting Rifles as an accessory and we only sell handguns in our stores in Alaska, stated Lundberg.

The nation's largest gun retailer is not altering its product assortment in the wake of the Newtown, Conn., shootings, a Walmart spokesperson told Patch.

“We remain dedicated to the safe and responsible sale of firearms in areas of the country where they are sold. Part of our commitment to gun safety is our involvement in the 'Mayors Against Illegal Guns' coalition,” Kory Lundberg, director of national media relations, said in an e-mail.

“We don’t sell guns online and we have made no change to the assortment of guns we sell in our stores,” wrote Lundberg.

Walmart operates 12 stores on Long Island.

Walmart's response comes on the heels of a move by Dick’s Sporting Goods to suspend the sale of some semi-automatic rifles from its stores across the country, including its four Long Island locations.

CNN reported that the sporting goods chain made the decision out of respect for the victims and families of Friday’s shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in  Newtown, Conn.
