Scarsdale Mayor Miriam Levitt Flisser addressed the Village Board of Trustees Monday night.

Mayor's Address: Village Events, Holidays

Mayor Flisser addressed the Village Board of Trustees Monday night. Here is her complete address:

I'm going to review some recent community events & activities.

On Sept. 13, I attended a "Cultural Tribute to Hellenism Festival" at the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, the largest Greek Orthodox Parish in Westchester, located  in nearby New Rochelle. Over 10,000 people attended the events, which featured examples of cultural culinary expertise, as well as musical presentations and carnival entertainment for children & adults.

On Sept. 19, County Exec Rob Astorino held a Town Hall event here in Rutherford Hall, where he discussed budgetary issues and tax relief, county construction projects, and the HUD housing settlement. Mr. Astorino also discussed uses of the Playland property, which currently requires taxpayer support. We're grateful that Mr. Astorino chose our town as a venue, and the event was packed with participants, in the expected Scarsdale response to political activism.

On Sunday Sept. 23, I attended two Community Events; A Barbeque sponsored by the Scarsdale Volunteer Ambulance Corps, and a Newcomers Welcome Fair in Chase Park, hosted by the Scarsdale Chamber of Commerce. Both events were well attended and highly enjoyable, with music, food, and plenty of sunshine. I met some newcomers who recently moved onto my own block, too.

Upcoming events this week, besides the Jewish High Holy days, include the Hadassah Organization's celebrating its 100th anniversary on Sunday, Sept 30. This Fall, Westchester Hadassah will host a Film Festival in co-sponsorship with the Scarsdale Public Library, with four free events. And next week, I'll be delivering the State of The Village address at the Forum's Fall Membership meeting on Thursday October 4 at 7:30 p.m. in the Scott room at the Library.

The American Diabetes Association Walk is this Sunday, Sept. 30 at Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry. Everyone is welcome to walk with our local team, Team Edgewood, the team with the most donations of 100 entered teams. Please join the team at 9:00 a.m. to sign in and receive a tee team tee shirt.

At the end of the meeting tonight, I'll read the upcoming Village Board meetings, as well, as we continue our work on the Harcourt Road Woods aspect of the watercourse, and our ongoing project for improvements in the Building Department process, so stay tuned for that.

In sad news, we mark the passing of a 38-year Scarsdale resident, Mrs. Beth Rubens, this morning. Beth was a community activist and respected member of the Scardale Overhill Association, where she served as an officer for many years. Funeral Services are at 11:30 a.m. at Riverside Funeral Home in Mount Vernon. Beth will be sorely missed by her family, friends and neighbors.
