Another commercial vacancy in Smithtown is filled.
Dave Simon, a former nine-year employee of the San Remo Deli in Kings Park, has opened Daves Deli (sic) in the former home to at 30 Terry Road in the VGM Center.
The deli will offer sandwiches, homemade pastries, wraps, salads and more, and will have a focus on healthy eating. Simon said they hope to use less grease in the cooking process and opt for lower calorie ingredients such as light mayonnaise.
Simon said he will also offer daily specials.
"We will have the norm, which is sandwiches, salads – cole slaw, potato, chicken, macaroni, egg salad and so on, and then every day we'll have fresh recipes ... we have some old-world German recipes," he said.
Daves Deli joins a crowded field of delis in the area. In Smithtown Patch's directory alone are 23 deli/convenience stores in the Smithtown, Nesconset and St. James area, many with die-hard followers, .
But Simon said he prizes a clean and hygienic environment, with food served by employees with lots of character. Simon added he wants his deli to become "a familiar place."
Daves Deli is open Monday through Friday from 5:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
