Smithtown Arsenal Celebrates National Title Win

The boys of soccer are ready to celebrate after coming off their national title win in Kansas last month.

The team, which took the title for boys under 16, will be honored by the town at a community celebration on Saturday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Moriches Park on Standish Place in Smithtown. The day will include food, music and games plus an award presentation to the boys.

Smithtown won all four of their games at Nationals, scoring 10 goals and conceding one.

“We’re basically a town team,” Coach Tom Lips stated. “10 of the boys are from the same town and played together in intramurals, through travel ball and now to this level. That’s what is most important. We want to create as much opportunity as possible for the boys.”

Smithtown is the third LIJSL boys team in the 47-year history of the league to win the national championship after the West Babylon Panthers won it all in 2000 and the Terryville Fire brought the national title back to Long Island in 2007.
