Smithtown Hires Firm to Oversee Upgrades to Montclair Avenue Yard

New garbage contract provide $3.5M in savings to finance the upgrades.

Smithtown Hires Firm to Oversee Upgrades to Montclair Avenue Yard
Smithtown elected officials have agreed to utilize savings from the town's new garbage carting contracts to upgrade the town's landfill to a "state-of-the-art" facility.

Smithtown town board hired Brookhaven-based contractor L.K. McLean associates to provide professional services overseeing the design and upgrades to Montclair Avenue landfill at a cost of $99,350,  Times of Smithtown  reports.

The town will use $500,000 a year in savings for the next 7 years from the new garbage carting contracts signed in August 2013 to upgrade the Montclair facility, offering a total budget of $3.5 million.

This savings primarily comes from the town's requirement that all garbage carters use trucks that operate using natural gas - one of the first Suffolk townships to do so since 2007.

Supervisor Patrick Vecchio said the upgrades will turn Montclair into the "state-of-the-art" facility over the next 8-9 months and include the purchase of scales.
