Police said 29-year-old defendant nearly sideswiped multiple vehicles as he weaved down Country Road 39.

Cops: Erratic Driving Leads To DWI Charge for East Hampton Man
The following arrests were reported by the Southampton Town Police Department east of the Shinnecock Canal over the past week. A charge is an accusation. Defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

Southampton

• Hernan Otavalo, 29, of East Hampton, was arrested and charged with DWI, a misdemeanor, on Sept. 8. According to police, Otavalo was driving a 2001 GMC pickup truck on County Road 39 in Southampton at around 11:30 p.m. when they stopped him for failing to maintain a lane and nearly sideswiping multiple vehicles. When police stopped him, they said he had a strong odor of alcohol on his breath, bloodshot, glassy eyes and was unsteady on his feet. He failed a field sobriety test and breathalyzer, police said. He was also charged with unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and unsafe lane changing, both violations.

Sagaponack

• Peter Esposito, 48, of West Islip, was arrested on Sept. 28, charged with DWI, a misdemeanor. According to police Esposito was driving eastbound on Montauk Highway in Sagaponack at around 8:30 p.m. when he was stopped for speeding. When police approached him they said he had a strong smell of alcohol on his breath, glassy, bloodshot eyes, slurred speech and was unsteady on his feet. Esposito failed a field sobriety test and a breathalyzer test and was arrested. He was also charged with speeding, driving with an open container and making an improper turn, all violations.
