NORTH SEA, NY — A fire broke out at the North Sea transfer station early Saturday morning, Southampton Town officials said.

At 7:40 a.m., the town received multiple emergency calls via the 911 system regarding smoke in the area, officials said.

Several callers reported viewing the smoke from near the SYS complex and said that the smoke may have been coming from the area of the North Sea transfer station, located at 1370 Majors Path, officials said.

First responders found two trucks fully engulfed in fire; one truck was a tractor trailer cab, and the other was a roll-off truck, officials said. The fire had also begun spreading to the front of the repair shop structure, officials said.

The North Sea Fire Department responded quickly and immediately began working to extinguish the fire and also vented the repair shop building of smoke and checked for any possible extension of the fire, officials said.

Southampton Volunteer Ambulance also responded and remained on scene in case of any injuries; no one was injured, town officials said.

Although the loss of at least one truck and the significant damage to another will impact the town, the damages could have been much greater if the fire had an opportunity to expand further to the structures on site, officials said.

The cause and origin of the fire is currently under investigation by the Southampton Town fire marshal's office and the Southampton Town police detectives; there are no indications that the fire is suspicious in nature at this time, officials said.
