New Parrish Art Museum Opens This Weekend

Fall Family Festival is Sunday afternoon.

New Parrish Art Museum Opens This Weekend

Hurricane Sandy threw a wrench in some of the plans for the unveiling of the new Parrish Art Museum in Water Mill, causing a number of events to be shuffled around, but the public opening is still happening on schedule.

The new 34,400-square-foot Herzog & de Meuron-designed building will open its doors to the public on Saturday, and admission will be free through Veterans Day on Monday.

On Friday evening, there will be a VIP open house and reception for $1,000+ museum members and invited donors, with architects Jacques Herzog, Pierre de Meuron, and Ascan Mergenthaler, landscape architect Doug Reed of Reed Hilderbrand, and furniture designer Konstantin Grcic of Konstantin Grcic Industrial Design.

All Parrish members are invited to an exclusive two-hour open house beginning at 9 a.m. on Saturday to tour the facility and meet the staff.

Then at 11 a.m. Saturday, everyone is welcome to the Parrish for the inaugural exhibition, "Malcolm Morley: On Paper," featuring paintings, screenprints, etching and monotype by the English artist, who has lived and worked in Bellport since 1983. There museum's permanent collection is also on display.

Free admission is offered from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Monday.

The Parrish's annual Fall Family Festival is happening Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m., with free admission. "BubbleMania," a performance with music, comedy and, of course, bubbles, begins at 1 p.m., then starting at 2 p.m. the festivities include art activities, facepainting by Agostino Arts, stilt-walkers, caricature portraits, balloon art and more.

There is still time to became a member in advance of the weekend's events, by contacting  Melissa Gatz in the Parrish's membership department at 631-283-2118, ext. 149 or membership@parrishart.org.
