UPDATE: Train Detained During Track Search UPDATE: Train Detained During Track Search

Update Monday 1:39 p.m. - Chief Thomas Cummings said the train's crew thought they hit a man walking the tracks. "A wallet was found but that person was found to be safe," Cummings said.

Fifty-five Long Island Rail Road passengers were delayed about an hour and 40 minutes Sunday night when their train was detained east of the Southampton station while a search of the tracks was conducted, according to MTA spokesman Aaron Donovan.

Donovan said the engineer of the westbound train from Montauk reported that someone was spotted near the tracks, though it was unknown what the person was doing. “No person was ever found,” Donovan said.

He confirmed reports that a wallet was discovered near the track and the owner of the wallet was identified, but said it is unclear if the owner is the same person who was seen.

The train was given the green light to resume along its route around 9:45 p.m.
