Severely Neglected Dog: $1,000 Reward for Those Responsible

The Putnam County SPCA and the New York State Humane Association are offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for a severely neglected dog.

A 16lb male poodle mix was found on Drewville Rd in Carmel, NY by a Good Samaritan on June 1.

Because of the horrific state of the dog, it appeared he had been hit by a car. A veterinary exam revealed that the 5- to 8-year-old dog was severely neglected. The dog’s fur was soiled, matted and putrid. He also suffered from a large abdominal tumor, as well as a bleeding and maggot-filled tumor on his head. His nails were growing into his paws making it difficult and painful for him to walk.

Without the help of the Good Samaritan who found him and the Roosevelt Veterinary Center in Brewster, the dog would have died a horrific death, SPCA officials said.

The individual(s) responsible for this extreme neglect are subject to a variety of misdemeanor charges including animal cruelty and abandonment.

"They must be caught and brought to justice," Humane Association officials said.

The New York State Humane Association in partnership with the NYS Department of Criminal Justice Services has conducted animal cruelty investigation workshops for police and humane investigators throughout the state for the past sixteen years, and recently held one at the Morrisville State College Campus in Madison County. NYSHA has offered rewards in the past to assist in law enforcement investigations.
