Students from Berry Hill Elementary School officially kicked off the districtwide PRIDE initiative on Oct. 29. Syosset PRIDE, which stands for patience, respect, integrity, dignity and empathy, promotes character education and encourages students to engage in positive behaviors inside and outside of the school environment.

To begin the program, students in kindergarten through second-grade learned about inclusion and empathy through a special program called “Hi Rez Comes to Earth,” which featured songs, puppets and comedy to engage the younger students. Third, fourth and fifth-graders learned about the different types of cyberbullying and how to combat it during the Cyber Busters assembly.

Both programs emphasized the tenants of Syosset PRIDE and tackled the topic of bullying. Additionally, physical education teachers held a kickoff rally to get students excited for the PRIDE program. All students and staff donned their Berry Hill PRIDE shirts, demonstrating their commitment to fostering a welcoming environment for all students. Each month, a different word associated with PRIDE will be taught, fostered and reinforced by grade level both inside and outside of the classroom.
