City on a Grid: How New York Became New York - Book Lecture

The Irvington Historical Society presents a lecture by popular author and New York historian Gerard Koeppel on his new book, City on a Grid: How New York Became New York. It details the fascinating story of New York’s iconic street grid, which not only allowed the city to expand and function efficiently but also influenced other cities and towns across America, including Irvington. During his talk, Koeppel will answer several important historical questions: Why did New Yorkers decide on a grid for their city? Who made this important decision and who opposed it? How was the grid laid out in Manhattan and the other boroughs? What was the impact of New York City’s grid on local, national, and world history? Koeppel, who has also written books about New York City’s water supply and the Erie Canal, will discuss his new book as the featured lecturer at the Irvington Historical Society’s Annual Meeting, which will be held on Friday, November 6, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. in the Main Street School auditorium located at 101 Main Street in Irvington, NY.
