UPDATE: Fire Guts Home on Pond Path

The home was fully engulfed in flames when fire fighters arrived on the scene.

Fire fighters arrived to find a one-story home fully engulfed in flames at 386 Pond Path in Setauket on Monday morning shortly after 8 a.m., after nearby neighbors reported heavy smoke in the area.

On Tuesday, chief Brendan Brown said the home's sole occupant was not home at the time of the fire.

Since the house is set far back into the woods off of Pond Path, officials at the scene said it was initially difficult to locate. In fact, Brown said, one fire truck even sustained some dents in the process of driving up to the house.

"The driveway was so narrow that the truck couldn't get up there," he said, adding that getting a second truck to the house was impossible.

Firefighters worked for approximately a full hour to fully extinguish the flames, Brown said.

Town of Brookhaven fire marshals and the Suffolk County arson squad are working to determine the cause of the fire.

Reports of smoke came in from residents of nearby neighborhoods. The Setauket Fire Department, Setauket Fire Rescue, Stony Brook Fire Department, Centereach Fire Department, and Terryville Fire Department responded to the fire, while the Stony Brook Volunteer Ambulance Corps was on standby at the Setauket Fire Department's Nicolls Road firehouse.
