When Back to School Means After School in Three Village

Many businesses in the area cater to students who want to boost test scores, or need academic help.

When Back to School Means After School in Three Village

For many area students, time in the classroom is not necessarily limited to time in school.

The college admissions process has become more complicated and seemingly more pressure-filled. In a flat economy, many feel every little edge helps to reach higher education goals.

That can mean trying for higher scores on standardized tests, or getting extra help in areas like reading and math.

It has given rise to a number of area businesses that are designed to give that extra help. Here's a look at some of them:

College 101: The East Setauket-based tutoring business run by Maryann Butkevich not only helps with test prep for the SATs, ACTs, and Regents exams, but it also brings in professionals to run seminars about college-related topics like the admissions process and NCAA qualifications. Call 631-689-9289 for more information.

Lentz & Lentz:  This company has offered classes in Setauket, Stony Brook, Port Jefferson and numerous other locations around Long Island. "We offer test preparation for the SAT, the PSAT and the ACT, as well as college counseling and private tutoring," says Jeremy Lentz, a director for the company. Lentz says the the company's tuition is "substantially less " than similar companies and also offers smaller class sizes. Lentz and Lentz offers classes year round and you can register on their website.

Huntington Learning Center: With locations in Smithtown, Patchogue, and elsewhere on Long Island offers help on college entrance exams as well as high school entrance exams such as the ISEE, SSAT, COOP and HSPT and other tests such as AP exams and GEDs. Huntington Learning Centers also offer individual tutors in areas such as reading, math, and science for K to 12 students.

Kumon Learning Centers: Not all tutoring services concentrate on entrance exams. Kumon Math and Reading Centers concentrate on improving academic skills of students from pre-school to 12th grade. The company has locations in Stony Brook and Smithtown. "We're an after school enrichment program," said Anu Dhir of the Plainview location, who said that Kumon uses their own curriculum. "We're all about practicing on a day to day basis, having students master the lesson before moving on."

Long Island Regents Prep: We're a long way from state Regents exams, but if you're ready to plan, this test prep service based out of Farmingdale State College will help you with sciences, math, U.S. and world history, and Spanish. You can register online.
