Upper East Side Building Evacuated Due To Large Crack, FDNY Says

UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — A six-story building on the Upper East Side was evacuated Thursday afternoon after a "large crack" was spotted in a building wall, an FDNY spokesman told Patch.

Fire officials operated at the scene of the building, which is located on the corner of East 96th Street and Second Avenue, an FDNY spokesman told Patch. Safeguards such as scaffolding and a collapse zone have been established, the spokesman told Patch.

The city Department of Buildings was called in to aid the fire department, an FDNY spokesman said. The DOB is "conducting structural stability inspections" of the building, a spokesman told Patch.

An investigation into the cause of the crack in the building is ongoing, a DOB spokesman said.

No injuries have been reported. East 96th Street was closed off to traffic between First and Second avenues as responders worked on the scene of the building, a WABC reporter Tweeted.
