Upper West Side Fire: 4-Alarm Blaze Hits Jacob's Pickles Building

A fire broke out Friday evening in the same building as the popular Upper West Side eatery. Five injuries have been reported.

UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — Firefighters battled a four-alarm blaze in the same building as popular Upper West Side restaurant Jacob's Pickles, fire officials confirmed on social media. While firefighters responded to the scene the blaze was upgraded from a two-alarm response to a four-alarm response. One non life-threatening injury to a civilian and four non life-threatening injuries to firefighters have been reported, an FDNY spokesman told Patch. Dozens of fire units, containing around 170 firefighters, responded to the scene of the fire, the spokesman said.

The fire broke out on the third floor of 511 Amsterdam Ave. — one door over from the comfort food hotspot — around 6 p.m. Friday evening. Flames were also reported in one of the building's shafts, according to fire officials. The fire was reported under control around 7:30 p.m., according to fire officials.

The fire has since spread to the building's fourth and fifth floors, according to the fire department.

A passerby snapped a photo which showed flames and smoke shooting out from a window on the building's upper floor.

Sports reporter John Giannone posted a video of the fire on Twitter in which onlookers can be heard saying "is that pickles?" and "that is so scary."

"Never a dull moment in NYC. Across the street from dinner. Tremendous rapid response from FDNY to this fire on 84th & Amsterdam," Giannone tweeted.
