Upper West Side Manhole Fires: Heavy Smoke Erupts From Holes Near Subway Station, FDNY Says

Firefighters responded to West 71st Street and Broadway to fight a group of manhole fires.

UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — Firefighters battled several manhole fires Thursday evening in the vicinity of the West 72nd Street and Broadway subway station, an FDNY spokesman told Patch.

The FDNY and Con Edison worked to control the fires as heavy gray and black smoke billowed from manholes, an FDNY spokesman said.

One witness said on social media that "smoke has been pouring from underground station for the last 10 minutes."

No injuries have been reported, an FDNY spokesman told Patch.
