As of this moment, mixed martial arts (MMA), the fight sport consisting of a mix of wrestling, submissions, and strikes, is illegal in New York State.
Despite a huge increase in the sport’s popularity in the past few years, due largely to the Zuffa owned Ultimate Fighting Championship, New York remains the last major holdout when it comes to legalizing MMA. Because of this, MMA fans in New York have been forced to drive to nearby New Jersey and Connecticut to see the thriving sport in person.
Despite a lack of MMA fights in the state, there are still good fight cards being held throughout the area. One such event comes to Wantagh Friday night, when Campbells Kickboxing and Jackhammer Promotions present “Fall Brawl 2” live at Mulcahy's Pub & Concert Hall at 7:30 p.m.
Campbells also conducted a at Mulcahy's on Aug. 21.
The card includes local kickboxing competitors such as Mike Casil, Jonathan Lopez, Bryan Campbell, Carmine Zocchi, TJ Maliadis, Doug Tatore, Matt Wernert, Tom Casil, and Elyse Tomasello. Two championships will be on the line as well, with Nick Riedel and David DeJesus battling over the PKF New York State super heavyweight title and Jesse McBroom of Levittown going toe to toe with Mike “Sledgehammer” Milazzo for the PKF New York State middleweight title.
In addition to the kickboxing, there will be a special grappling championship scrap between Chris Schlessinger and Carmine Zocchi.
Tickets are $40 for general admission standing room or $55 for table seats with waitress service. For more info, visit muls.com.
