UPDATED: House Fire On Ponquogue Avenue

Ponquogue Ave. was shut down at Montauk Highway and Good Ground for several hours.

The and the Hampton Bays Ambulance responded to a residential blaze at 33 Ponquogue Avenue in Hampton Bays on Thursday, a fire virtually distroyed the estate.

The home, according to Southampton Police, had three apartments and all tenants got out safely along with their pets. One tenant, however, who escaped, did wind up back on the roof for unknown reasons.

Hampton Bays Fire Chief John Tedesco said the man was assisted down from the roof and it was a non-life-threatening incident.

"He was never in danger," said Tedesco.

One firefighter was taken to Southampton Hospital with complaints of chest pains and as of 8 pm. his condition was unknown.

Tedesco said the Hampton Bays Fire Department was on scene for two hours and ten minutes, but had the fire under control in about 40 minutes.

"My men did a great job. It was a fire that had a lot of headway and grew very quickly in first three to five minutes," said Tedesco.

The fire had nearby roadways shut down and also caused delays on the Long Island Rail Road with hoses running across the tracks.

Assistance was provided by the, , Flanders and Southampton Village Fire Departments, as well as the Flanders ambulance.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Southampton Town Fire Marshal, however the reported that it appears the fire started outside the home.

UPDATE: 5:48 p.m. According to the Long Island Rail Road "the 2:51 p.m. train from Montauk due Jamaica at 5:50 p.m. is operating 72 minutes late" due to the fire.

UPDATE: 4:35 p.m. The fire is reportedly out, but firefighters are still on the scene. The fire marshal has also been called in. So far, the cause of the fire remains unknown.

UPDATE: 4:12 p.m. Animal control officers have been called to the scene. A cat is reportedly in the home.

UPDATE 3:56 p.m.: A firefighter who is complaining of chest pains is being taken to the hospital.

According to reports, Hampton Bays fire trucks were dispatched to a residential fire at 33 Ponquogue Avenue in Hampton Bays around 3:12 p.m.

According to police chatter Ponqogue Avenue has been shut down at Montuak Highway and Good Ground.

The Flanders Fire Department has also been called to the scene and the fire department has advised the MTA that they need to lay a hose across the LIRR track and a train is stuck sitting on the east side of the tracks.
