Shellfish were fair game early Friday morning and fishermen took the bays to harvest bushels of bay scallops after the Department of Environmental Conservation lifted shellfishing restrictions that were put in place after Hurricane Sandy

The state had deemed area waterways hazardous for use as food after the storm hit.

Friday's lifting allowed scallop season to commence though a few days later than it was normally is set to start — the official opening was slated for Nov. 5.
