Update: 2 Dead, 1 Injured After Small Plane Crashes At Gabreski Airport

The plane was practicing takeoffs and landings when it crashed Sunday afternoon.

Update: 2:20 p.m.: Two people have died and one person was injured after small plane crashed at Francis S. Gabreski Airport in Westhampton Beach Sunday afternoon, multiple sources have confirmed.

"A Navion F aircraft with three people onboard crashed into trees while practicing takeoffs and landings at Gabreski Airport in Suffolk County, New York," Kathleen Bergen, media representative for the Federal Aviation Administration told Patch Sunday. "The accident occurred at 11:40 a.m. today. Local authorities will release the names and conditions of the people on board, the FAA will release or confirm the aircraft registration after that."

The FAA, she said, was en route to the scene. The National Transportation Safety Board will be in charge of the investigation and will determine probable cause. The FAA will update information as it becomes available, she said.

Gabreski Airport is a general aviation airport owned and operated by Suffolk County. The airport, which has three runways, is utilized by private aviation, corporate businesses and air taxi services.

The airport is also home to the 106th Rescue Wing of the Air National Guard.
