Police: Homeless Man Steals Cash, Underwear

A 38-year-old homeless man was arrested Saturday after police discovered he allegedly broke into a Hampton Bays dentist’s office, replaced a pair of clean underwear with dirty ones, and stole cash and razors.

The office manager of a Hampton Bays dentist told police that on either Nov. 10 or Nov. 11, someone broke into the office, showered and swapped underwear, according to a complaint report. The manager said that same person also stole $50 and took a shaving razor.

Police arrested David Gibbons for the crime after sombody identified his belongings outside the dentist's office.

Gibbons was arrested Saturday at 8:30 a.m. and charged with third-degree burglary, a felony, and petty larceny, a misdemeanor.

The non-profit Maureen's Haven, which provides shelter to the homeless over the winter, has reported that homeless numbers are on the rise on the East End and in Hampton Bays believes the trend, which can be attributed to the economy, will continue to rise through 2012.
