Extended Hours for Door-to-Door Solicitors Considered

Existing law prevents solicitors from knocking on your door past 8 p.m. — proposed law looks to change that.

Extended Hours for Door-to-Door Solicitors Considered

As the law stands, solicitors cannot knock your door past 8 p.m. in the city of Lakewood.

A proposed ordinance may extend that to 9 p.m.

“Our research showed that the courts widely prefer a 9 p.m. curfew on door-to-door solicitors under the First Amendment to the Constitution,” said Kevin Butler, the city’s law director.

“Our ordinance currently imposes an 8 p.m. curfew, which has been found to be an unreasonable restraint on free speech in the context of canvassers who solicit money for their various causes.”

Butler, who introduced the measure to council on Monday, said he’ll “brief council more fully” on the proposal at its next rules and ordinances committee meeting.
