Local Business Owner Outsmarts Scammers

On Jan. 24, D & R Bagels on Aurora Road received a call from someone claiming to be from the Illuminating Company who said that the business's electric bill.

The caller threatened that the business would have its electricity shut off if the bill wasn't paid by 1:30 p.m. that day.

The business owner said they talked to two different men on the phone, both with "strong accents," according to the police report.

The businesses owner was wise to the scam, and knew they were current on the bill. They called the energy company and were told their account was fine and that the callers were scammers.
