Student Trip May Be Canceled Due to Strongsville Teachers Strike

Schools can't sanction high school visit to New York

Student Trip May Be Canceled Due to Strongsville Teachers Strike

Travel plans for the Art and Science New York City Tour trip for Strongsville High School students are no longer sponsored or sanctioned by the school district due to the ongoing teachers strike, Superintendent John Krupinski said.

“Since trip chaperones and advisors are primarily teachers’ union or Strongsville Educations Association (SEA) members, the art and science trip intended for April 18 to 21 of this year is no longer sanctioned, sponsored or supported by Strongsville City Schools,” Krupinski said in a news release.

In March, the district canceled sponsorship of two other trips -- a  March 22-29 and a String and Freshman Orchestras trip to Chicago March 23-23 for a performance -- for the same reason.

Krupinski said the trips were approved by the School Board with the understanding teachers would chaperone.

"We can't support a trip that isn't appropriately supervised," he said in March.

However, he said parents can still step forward and take over the New York trip.

“Families that decide to arrange their own itineraries for this location should continue in keeping with guidelines for excused student absences, however Strongsville City Schools can no longer assume any responsibility and liability associated with this trip,” Krupinski said.
