Missing Swimmer Presumed Dead

The Multnomah County Sheriff's Office dive team continues to search for the body of 50-year-old John David Martin of Portland. He was last seen Wednesday night swimming off of Ackerman Island.

Emergency crews responded to the north side of the island Wednesday night around 9:00 after receiving a report that a man had gone under.

Martin was on the island with his family and had gone under as he tried to retrieve a boat that had become unmoored. Family members told officials that Martin had swam out to the boat as it drifted toward the channel.

At one point, he apparently went under and they lost track of him.

In addition to the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office, rescue boats from Portland Fire, Gresham Fire, Vancouver Fire, as well as a helicopter from the United States Coast Guard participated in the search.
