Glenside's Maddy Evans Is Beantown Bound

Evans to join the new National Women's Soccer League in its first professional season.

Glenside's Maddy Evans Is Beantown Bound

Abington High School graduate Maddy Evans was an all-star on the Penn State University's women's soccer team. As one of the team's midfielders, Evans led the Lady Lions to their first national championship in the NCAA.

Though they suffered a loss, the Nittany Lions were proud of their midfielder.

"One of the best and most hard-working players in the country," said the  Lady Lions Head Soccer Coach Erica Walsh of Evans. "We anticipate her helping us in the midfield, but she can play anywhere on the field and will be an amazing asset to our group."

The Boston Breakers agreed.

According to a report on Onward State, Evans was scooped up in the fourth round of the inaugural draft of the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL). She'll be headed to Beantown for its first pro season.

"She started all 26 games and registered 13 points (5 goals, 3 assists) from her defensive midfielder position," said the Onward State article. "Evans will be in good company — she’ll be playing alongside U.S. National Team members Heather O’Reilly and Sydney Leroux."

According to GoPSUSports.com, Evans said she enjoyed her time as a Lady Lion.

"I chose Penn State because of the team chemistry, coaching staff, atmosphere, and a great school that offers everything," said Evans on her profile.

Evans is the daughter of Grant and Elizabeth Evans, of Glenside. She is one of four children.

The four-year letterwinner at Abington High School lettered in cross country and indoor track, captaining both squads senior year and capturing All-League honors. Evans was All-State in the 800m, and a two-year letterwinner in lacrosse, earning All-League recognition in 2008. She also lettered in outdoor track, and was a recipient of the Union League of Philadelphia Good Citizenship Award and a member of the National Honor Society.

While at Penn State, Evans was majoring in English.
