Excessive Heat Warning Issued For MontCo This Weekend

The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning for Montgomery County "in anticipation of an oppressively hot air mass with a heat index of 100º F or greater" this weekend, according to Lower Merion Township.

The warning begins at noon on Friday and will end at 8 p.m. on Sunday, the NWS said.

Temperatures in the high 90s are expected for Friday through Sunday in Lower Merion, according to the NWS.

"The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will create a dangerous situation in which heat illnesses are likely," NWS cautions.

Residents should take precautions to prevent heat-related stress and exhaustion, Lower Merion township states. Those especially at risk include "very young children, elderly adults, and people with chronic medical conditions and/or taking certain medications. Friends, relatives, or neighbors should check on people who may be at risk."

This weekend's excessive heat warning coincides with a variety of outdoor activities in light of the Independence Day holiday, so be safe if you are planning to be outside.

Lower Merion Township advises:

  • Drink plenty of water and wear light weight, light colored and loose-fitting clothing.
  • If at all possible, try to get outdoor work completed during the morning to avoid the warmest part of the day.
  • Keep cool by seeking an air conditioned building if available, or seek rest in the shade.
