Belfi comes aboard with prior law enforcement, as well as military, experience.

Meet Narberth’s Newest Police Officer: Matthew Belfi

The Narberth Police Department officially welcomed Officer Matthew Belfi to its ranks at Narberth Borough’s Jan. 6. Organizational Meeting.

Officer Belfi comes to the Narberth Police Department from the Philadelphia Police Department, and has a military background that includes aviation experience.

The following biographical information was prepared by Officer Belfi and provided to Patch by the Narberth Police Department.

I was born in 1978 in Media, PA and first resided in Somerdale, NJ until my family moved to Schuylkill Township, PA outside Valley Forge in 1983. I attended St. Ann’s (later renamed Holy Family) Catholic School in Phoenixville for grade school and then attended Archbishop John Carroll H.S. where I graduated in 1996.

I enlisted in the Army Reserve on 10 May 1996 and then began attending classes at Valley Forge Military College in the Fall Semester of the same year. I graduated from VFMC in 1998 with an Associates Degree in General Studies and I also simultaneously received my commission in the U.S. Army Reserve as an Infantry 2nd Lieutenant. I later became an Emergency Medical Technician and worked at various locations in that capacity until I received the opportunity to become an Aviation Officer and go to flight school for the U.S. Army in 2002. I completed flight school in November 2003 and earned my FAA rating as a Commercial Instrument Rotorcraft (helicopter) Pilot. I would later complete my degree with a Bachelor of Science in Professional Aeronautics from Embry - Riddle Aeronautical University in 2006.

In May of 2003 I was accepted into the Philadelphia Police Department and following the completion of the police academy was assigned to the 1st District in South Philadelphia. In 2005 I was sent to Egypt with the PA Army National Guard for the month of September and participated in a multi-national exercise there. I was then deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom with the PA Army National Guard in 2006 and was stationed in Baghdad, Iraq until I returned home in July, 2007. Prior to deploying in May 2006, I was wed to my beautiful wife Kimberly, with a Church service to follow upon my return from deployment on 3 November 2007.

I then transferred in 2008 to the 14th District in Northwest Philadelphia but was then subsequently called back to service for another deployment to Iraq in 2009. Following redeployment from Iraq I returned to service in the 14th District until transferred to Center City District as a bicycle patrol officer in 2011. On September 28th of the same year, my wife and I were blessed with the birth of our beautiful daughter Genevieve.

On my free time I enjoy spending time with my family, motorcycle riding, working on my Jeep and Harley Davidson, studying history, reading and bettering my firearms proficiency.

Editor’s note: Officer Belfi also served as a member of the Philadelphia Police Department Honor Guard, MIRT (Major Incident Response Team) and CIT (Crisis Intervention Team).

Be sure to give Officer Belfi a friendly welcome when you see him on patrol.
