Celebrating Farmers, Their Work and Their Contribution to the State

If you have a hankering for some old-fashioned fun, you’re in luck: The 2014 Pennsylvania Farm Show starts Saturday.

The Pennsylvania Farm Show, held each year in Harrisburg, is the nation’s largest indoor agricultural exposition, boasting nearly 6,000 animals, 10,000 competitive exhibits and 300 commercial exhibits. The 2014 event is the 98th annual show.

The theme for the 2014 show is “PA Farms: Growing for You,” and will highlight the fact that farming has a $68 billion economic impact on the state, providing one in seven jobs, farm show officials said.

Among some of the special events new for 2014 are a Snickerdoodle contest, set for 4 p.m. Jan. 7; a rabbit-hopping competition, in which the bunnies will be judged on speed and agility, set for 3:30 p.m. Jan. 5; and new competitions for specific animal breeds, including Sim/Solution, Sim/Angus, Lim- Flex and Shorthorn Plus beef cattle.

The show’s busiest times are between 3:30 and 5 p.m., farm show officials said, so if you go, you may want to arrive between 9 a.m. and noon, when crowds aren’t as heavy.

A food court featuring Pennsylvania foods — including local honey, milkshakes, and roast-beef sandwiches — will be open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. See a full list of food exhibitors and the Pennsylvania products they’ll be selling.

Pennsylvania Secretary of Agriculture George Greig suggests that farm show attendees follow him on Twitter at @PA_AgSecretary and use the hashtag #PAFarmShow to let him know how this year’s show is going.
