Good News for Patients and Health Workers

Here's the latest from Sen. Tim Solobay, D-Canonsburg.

Good News for Patients and Health Workers

Progress in the affiliation agreement between Highmark and West Penn Allegheny Health System is good news for the people of southwestern Pennsylvania who depend on these two health-care giants.

And it’s not just patients who are breathing a sigh of relief—thousands of employees were affected by the difficult negotiations that led to the recent agreement over debt financing.

Highmark recently submitted an amended affiliation agreement to the Pennsylvania Department of Insurance, and I hope the department can act quickly to create stability for the patients and health-care workers of the region.

You can see the amended filing and submit a comment about the plan by clicking here. You can also submit comments by email to: rbrackbill@pa.gov.

Learning About Poverty to End It

Any attempt to fight poverty has to begin with understanding it.

I applaud Community Action Southwest for sponsoring a program to help people in different walks of life understand poverty and the people affected by it.

CASW’s “Bridges Out of Poverty” training will be held in Washington at 150 West Beau Street in the 4th floor conference room.

Sessions will be held from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 11 and  from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13.

UFCW Members Discuss Future of PA Liquor Stores

Now that Gov. Tom Corbett has announced a plan to tie education funding to selling off state liquor stores, employees of the state store system are concerned that thousands of family sustaining jobs are in jeopardy.

I sat down with members of Local 23 of the United Food and Commercial Workers this week to talk about the future of Corbett's plan and the bipartisan opposition that it will face in the legislature.

We also discussed pension reform and other labor topics.
