Last year, the local Red Cross West Central Pennsylvania Chapter, serving Beaver, Butler, Lawrence and Mercer counties, responded to nearly 100 disasters in the community—most often home fires.

The organization’s volunteer network provides disaster victims with immediate relief in the form of food, clothing, shelter and comfort. However, the humanitarian work could not be accomplished without this very network of dedicated and passionate volunteers.

With a low number of volunteers, the local chapter is actively recruiting volunteers to serve as disaster responders. The Red Cross encourages interested Cranberry area residents to become a part of the team.

As part of the Disaster Action Team, disaster response volunteers work with victims on-site, assisting them with their immediate needs and following-up on their long-term recovery plans.

As a nonprofit organization, the Red Cross relies on the volunteer network to carry out its humanitarian mission—to prevent and alleviate human suffering in the face of emergencies throughout the area.

Volunteers make up more than 96 percent of the Red Cross workforce.

The organization places interested residents in appropriate volunteer roles based on their skills, interests and experience.

To get involved as a disaster response volunteer, or for more information on how to help in the community, contact Cindy Skiles, program specialist with the local Red Cross at 724-283-2810 or at Cindy.Skiles@RedCross.org.
