Heavy Snow Hits Dormont-Brookline Area Wednesday

    If you've been hoping for a winter wonderland, you've got it!

    The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for Allegheny County, effective from 5 a.m. Wednesday through 6 a.m. Thursday.

    Four to eight inches of snow are expected to accumulate throughout the day, with heavy snow occurring mid-Wednesday morning through the afternoon. Sleet and freezing rain are also expected.

    Visibility for motorists could be limited to a quarter-of-a-mile during heavy snows, according to the NWS.

    Hazardous travel conditions are expected.

    Here's the forecast for the Dormont-Brookline area:

    • Wednesday—Snow before 1 p.m., then freezing rain and sleet between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m., then snow after 2 p.m. High near 33. Breezy, with a east wind 18 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 31 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100 percent. Total daytime snow and sleet accumulation of 3 to 5 inches possible.
    • Wednesday Night—Snow showers likely before 10 p.m., then snow showers likely, possibly mixed with freezing drizzle. Cloudy, with a low around 26. Northeast wind 10 to 17 mph becoming northwest after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent. Little or no snow accumulation expected.
    • Thursday—A chance of snow showers, mainly before 1 p.m. Cloudy, with a high near 32. West wind 13 to 17 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40 percent. Little or no snow accumulation expected.
    • Thursday Night—Mostly cloudy, with a low around 22. West wind 10 to 14 mph, with gusts as high as 24 mph.
