One police officer has been shot in an incident near Doylestown as Hurricane Irene continued pounding Bucks County early Sunday morning.

A second officer had glass blown into his eyes from a window shattered by bullets during the exchange of gunfire.

Neither injury was believed to be life-threatening. The officer who was shot reportedly drove himself to the hospital.

The incident began shortly after midnight, according to emergency services reports. Police officers were chasing a black Dodge pickup with Virginia license plates, wanted for an incident initially reported as being in Hilltown Township.

An occupant in the truck reportedly fired shots at police in the 100 block of W. Swamp Road. One of the officers was struck but was able to drive himself to Doylestown Hospital, according to emergency reports.

A second officer was injured when bullets shattered a car window and glass was blown into his eyes.

The truck reportedly fled the scene. It was last seen heading southbound on Rt. 611. Officers believed the driver may have exited at Broad Street or Rt. 202.

Police were continuing to search the area even as Irene lashed Central Bucks with wind-driven sheets of rain.

Witnesses saw three police cars and flares set up near Rt. 611 and the 313 exit around 12:30 a.m.
