Dad Will Plead Guilty to Neglecting Son's Teeth

An Easton man will plead guilty to to the point that the boy extracted two of his own teeth with a pliers.

Francisco Torres, 41 waived his preliminary hearing in the case Wednesday before . Torres' attorney said prosecutors will drop one of the charges against his client -- endangering the welfare of a child -- in exchange for a guilty plea to reckless endangerment.

Corpora set a formal arraignment date for August 8, and Torres would likely plead guilty then.

Torres was arrested in April after police learned he had allegedly ignored his 14-year-old son's complaints of a toothache for nearly a year.

According to police, Torres told his son that he had insurance and transportation issues, which prevented him from taking the boy to see a dentist.

But police said Torres later showed investigators a valid insurance card. Children and Youth had provided travel vouchers to the family. The boy had to undergo emergency surgery to remove fragments of the teeth.

Before his hearing Tuesday, Torres spent several minutes in conference with his lawyer. At one point, he emerged from a conference room, sat at the defense table, and muttered "It's so hard to be a parent."

After a second, more heated conference, Torres emerged cursing. "It's all bulls--t," he said.

Torres is free on bail. He and his attorney -- Timothy Prendergast -- declined to comment, as did Assistant District Attorney Patricia Broscius.
