Electricity will be out at Easton College for several days, college president says.

Lafayette Cancels Classes for Rest of Week

Lafayette College students are getting an unexpected break from classes, thanks to Hurricane Sandy.

College President Daniel Weiss said Wednesday that the school would cancel classes through Friday due to a power outage that could last several days. And with classes called off, the college recommending that students head home.

"Students who have a safe method of travel home are encouraged to do so, Weiss wrote in his message to the campus. "If you plan to go home, please inform your parents and please travel with caution."

For students that remain on campus, the college website listed these reminders:

  • The Office of Public Safety will continue operating with increased staffing.
  • Health Services and Counseling Services will operate as normal at Bailey Health Center.
  • Residence halls are secure, and generators are supplying emergency power.
  • Professional and student staff members in the Office of Residence Life are keeping students informed about procedures and supplies designed to improve safety, security, and comfort during the outage.
  • Dining Services will continue providing meals for students, and there is no shortage of food and water. Today, food service in Marquis Hall is continuous from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Beginning tomorrow, and until further notice, food service will include continental breakfast from 7:30-10 a.m. and continuous brunch and dinner service from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • The LCAT shuttle service will operate on a limited, modified schedule.
  • Follow-up communications will be issued to students about the LCAT schedule and to provide details on numerous activities being scheduled on campus.
  • Farinon College Center and Kirby Sports Center will be open with natural light from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. for activities. This schedule will be in effect until further notice.
  • Cell phones and other electronics may be charged in Marquis Hall and Kirby Sports Center.
