Montco Church Shooting: Man Killed in Altercation Identified [UPDATED]

One person has reportedly been killed in a shooting that occurred after a disturbance escalated, police said.

NORTH WALES, PA -- One person was killed in a shooting at a Montgomery County church when a disturbance escalated into an altercation between two church members, authorities said.

Montgomery County district attorney Kevin Steele identified the victim as 27-year-old Robert Braxton, of Montgomeryville. Speaking to reporters at a press conference, Steele said at least one shot was fired by one of the two church members during the altercation that took place around 11 a.m.

No one is in custody and the second church member involved in the shooting is cooperating with police, Steele said.

Police responded to the scene around 11:30 a.m. and found Braxton suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. He was transported to Lansdale Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

Braxton was shot with a semi-automatic handgun, police said.

Keystone is located on 427 Stump Road. Stump Road was closed after the incident between Orchard Drive and DeKalb Pike.

The North Wales location holds services on Sunday morning at 11 a.m. Their social media pages indicated that a special guest speaker would be participating in the April 24 services.

When asked if the shooting had anything to do with the speaker, Steele said he was not aware of any connection.

The church released a statement Sunday afternoon on Facebook following the incident:

We at Keystone are saddened to confirm that a shooting took place at our Montgomeryville campus this morning. One man was shot and another is being questioned by police; no one was else was hurt. Police and medical personnel were called immediately. Police are investigating and we will release further information as soon as it becomes available. Our congregation is in prayer for everyone involved.

Police said that the area was secured shortly after the shooting.

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing and authorities said they will investigate whether the shooting was justified by law.

Fire Police from the Fire Department of Montgomery Township were on the scene as of 11:45 a.m., according to Montco Active Incidents.

EMS Station 345, the VMSC of Lansdale, also responded to the scene.
